LOS ANGELES - Paris Hilton was released from a Los Angeles County jail early Thursday because of an unspecified medical problem and will fulfill the remainder of her sentence for probation violation in home confinement, a sheriff's spokesman said.
The 26-year-old hotel heiress was sent home shortly after 2 a.m. wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.
Hilton was sentenced to 45 days for violating her probation in a reckless driving case, but had been expected to serve 23 days in jail because of state rules allowing shorter sentences for good behavior.
She ended up spending three full days at the all-women's facility in Lynwood, but because she checked in late Sunday and left early Thursday, authorities credited her with five days of time served. She'll be confined to her Hollywood Hills home for 40 days.
"I can't specifically talk about the medical situation other than to say that yes, it played a part in this," Whitmore said.
Hutton didn't immediately return calls seeking comment Thursday. Nor did her publicist, Elliot Mintz.
Whitmore refused to answer questions from reporters when asked if the medical condition was physical or psychological. He said it was not a staph infection. The jail provided Hilton with a pamphlet on the skin infection when she checked in.
The conditions of Hilton's home confinement were not immediately disclosed. Whitmore referred all questions to the L.A. County Probation Department. Messages left for the person handling media calls weren't immediately returned.
Hilton had surrendered to authorities with little fanfare late Sunday after a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards, where she worked the red carpet in a strapless designer gown.
"I am trying to be strong right now," she told reporters at the time. "I'm ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me, and that's really helpful."
Hilton was housed in the "special needs" unit of the 13-year-old jail, separate from most of its 2,200 inmates. The unit contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates. She didn't have a cellmate.
Hilton's lawyer, Richard A. Hutton, said Monday after his client's first night in jail that she was doing well under the circumstances.
"She's using this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world better and hopefully, in my opinion, to change the attitudes that exist about her among many people," Hutton said after visiting Hilton.
When Hilton was sentenced May 4, Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer ruled she would not be allowed any work release, furloughs or use of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail.
Whitmore said Thursday that Sauer "was consulted and he was advised."
Officers arrested Hilton in Hollywood on Sept. 7. In January, she pleaded no contest to the reckless-driving charge and was sentenced to 36 months' probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.
She was pulled over by California Highway Patrol on Jan. 15. Officers informed Hilton she was driving on a suspended license and she signed a document acknowledging she was not to drive. She then was pulled over by sheriff's deputies on Feb. 27, at which time she was charged with violating probation.

'I love you,' Pitt tells Jolie in gold
PARIS (AFP) - "I love you, Brad" ends a not-so-secret 18-carat golden love-letter from Pitt to Angelina Jolie, offered shortly before the A-list couple flew in for the Cannes film festival last month.
Made by a master Paris engraver, the love-letter pendant, a miniature gold card slipped discreetly into a golden envelope, begins: "I find you in the morning sky, in the sound of children's laughter, in the motion of every stirring wind."
"I love you, Brad," the message ends.
The around 1,500-euro piece of jewelry from Pitt to Jolie also includes a portrait of tiny Pax Thien, the last of three children adopted by the couple who also have a birth daughter, Shiloh, said a spokesman for the French luxury engraver and printer Cassegrain.
Jolie said last month she plans to take an entire year off from acting to spend time with her family in 2008.
Jolie told People magazine's online edition in an interview on the sidelines of the Cannes filmfest that she would take a sabbatical after completing work on several projects later this year.
The couple took their children along to Cannes for the promotion of their new film, "A Mighty Heart". Starring Jolie and produced by Pitt, the movie directed by Michael Winterbottom is about the murder of US reporter Daniel Pearl by Islamic extremists.

Paris Hilton sentenced to 45 days in jail
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A judge sentenced a shocked and tearful Paris Hilton to 45 days in jail on Friday, ruling that the hotel heiress violated her probation for a previous traffic offense by knowingly driving without a valid license.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer rejected Hilton's defense that she didn't realize her license was suspended and ordered the 26-year-old socialite to report to a county detention facility on June 5.
Hilton wept and her mother, Kathy, yelled at the prosecutor, "You're pathetic," as the packed courtroom cleared.
The stunning decision capped a two-hour hearing in which prosecutors argued that Hilton was thumbing her nose at the court and seeking to be placed above the law, while defense lawyers said she was being singled out for harsh treatment because of her celebrity.
Taking the witness stand in her own defense, the star of the reality TV show "The Simple Life" testified that she was unaware her driving privileges had been completely suspended at the time police stopped her and impounded her car on February 27.
Hilton said her publicist, Elliot Mintz, had told her she was permitted to drive for work-related reasons after the first 30 days of her license suspension late last November, and that she relied on what he had said.
But the judge said he did not believe Hilton, pointing to a notice she had received from a police officer, and had signed, during another traffic stop in January.
He said Hilton had "completely ignored" that notice, which she had carried in her glove box for weeks, and another license suspension notice sent to her office address by the Department of Motor Vehicles that Hilton said she never saw.
"In my opinion, there's not doubt that she knew that her license had been suspended," the judge said. "She doesn't look at her mail, her personal assistant never goes through it either. ... I think she just wanted to disregard everything that was said and continued to drive no matter what."
"I'M SORRY"
In a final statement before she was sentenced, Hilton, dressed in a gray waist jacket, white blouse and black pants, her blond hair tied back in a pony tail, stood before the judge and denied that she had sought to flout the law.
"I did what I was told. I would never drive just because I want to. I follow the law and I respect the law. From now on I want to pay complete attention to everything," she said. "I just want to say I'm sorry."
But the judge was unmoved.
"Probation is revoked -- 45 days in jail," he declared.
Hilton's lawyer, Howard Weitzman, said he would appeal "to modify the sentence."
"It is clear that she has been selectively targeted for prosecution for who she is," he said outside the courthouse.
Hilton was sentenced in January to three years on probation and ordered into an alcohol-education program for pleading no contest -- the equivalent of a guilty plea -- to alcohol-related reckless driving after a September 2006 arrest.

Victoria Beckham, Cameron Diaz, Robin Williams, Jessica Biel and Bruce Willis were among the celebrities poised to pass the popcorn at Sunday's 16th annual MTV Movie Awards, but Lindsay Lohan planned to pass the show.
The actress, scheduled to be a presenter of the ceremony's distinctive "Golden Popcorn" trophy before she checked into rehab last week, was skipping the telecast, her publicist confirmed Friday.
Lohan sought treatment after a wild Memorial Day weekend during which she crashed her Mercedes-Benz into a curb, was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence and was photographed slumped in the passenger seat of a friend's car.
Two "Dreamgirls" stars, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and Grammy winner Beyonce Knowles, were in the running for best performance at the Sunday night awards, scheduled for live broadcast on MTV from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City. Sarah Silverman was set to host.
Also nominated in the best performance category were Will Smith for "The Pursuit of Happyness," Keira Knightley for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and Gerard Butler for "300."
Smith's 9-year-old son, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith, was nominated for breakthrough performance for his role opposite his father in "The Pursuit of Happyness." Other nominees in that category included Justin Timberlake for "Alpha Dog" and "Little Miss Sunshine" star Abigail Breslin.
Films nominated for best movie were "300," "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," "Blades of Glory," "The Devil Wears Prada," "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan."
The blood-soaked "300" garnered a leading five nominations, followed by "Dead Man's Chest" with four.
Sacha Baron Cohen, aka Borat, was up for three awards, including best comedic performance, best fight (with Ken Davitian) and best kiss (with Will Ferrell in "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby").
The MTV Movie Awards were chosen by fans, who voted online and by text message.

The half-sister of the famously deceased Playboy Playmate, Donna Hogan, says in an interview to Steppin' Out magazine that she's planning on remaking herself in her sister's image by getting breast enhancements and dying her hair blond, as reported by Page Six . After that, she's planning on contacting Playboy head Hugh Hefner, hoping to become a centerfold just like Anna Nicole was.
"A few years ago, Playboy approached me and I almost agreed to do it. But I was too chicken. My boobs weren't big enough," Hogan said to Steppin' Out's Chaunce Hayden, Page Six reports.” I just had a birthday and I'm going to treat myself to new boobs. I just want to get my body to where I want it and I'll be ready to step in and do it ... You'll definitely see a transformation in the next year."
Hogan recently wrote a tell-all biography about her life with Anna Nicole Smith titled "Train Wreck." In it, she describes her sister's "double breast enhancement" which wound up being so heavy, it forced her to take prescription drugs to quell her back pain.
Hogan also tears into Smith's partner, Howard K. Stern, calling him "a creepy little weasel-looking thing, adding that she'd "love to just beat the [bleep] out of him.
